Intro to Pastoral Ministry

The module maintains that the role of pastoral ministry is derived from God's Word and is essential to church affairs. To be called, one must follow God, not just those who choose to do so. The idea that celebrity leadership and the clergy are elevated above other believers is not a reflection of their pastoral calling. This course covers biblical standards of expertise, great responsibility, and serious spiritual duty in pastoral ministry. Additionally, The significance of the calling as a link to the wider Christian heritage throughout history is now introduced.

This module centers on who we are as pastors rather than what we as pastors do. It investigates spirituality, morality, stability, and the authenticity of a pastor’s life as the basis of successful ministry. The development of a pastor’s character through the Bible and biblical studies, including such topics as pride, temptation, hypocrisy, and the role of endurance, is considered in depth in this module. The importance of the fact that a pastor’s authority derives not from position or title, but from being faithful, and the role of integrity in the long-term influence of a pastor, is also covered in this module.

This module begins the development of a theology of pastoral ministry and its relationship with Scripture. The pastor’s role as a manager of God’s Word, guarding it and communicating it correctly and in a respectful way, will be explored. The relationship of theology with practice will be explored, illustrating the relationship of theology with the pastor’s decision-making, preaching, care, and leadership practices. The role of the pastor in the preservation of orthodoxy, the rejection of heresy, and the development of theological literacy in the church will be covered. The role of the pastor in living by Scripture and not by revelation will be highlighted.

This module looks at the nature, purpose, and mission of the church and the significance of pastoral ministry in the body of Christ. Other issues we shall address are the issues of unity and discipline, membership, the nature of sacraments or ordinances, and the witness of the church.

This module is based on a Scripture-based theology and practice of pastoral care, formed in response to the shepherd’s work of Christ and characterized by faithful presence, wisdom, self-control, and love. Pastoral care is considered not as professional work or as a method of therapy but as involvement in and through God’s care for His people as expressed in the Covenant. The work of the pastor in leading individuals through times of pain, doubt, sin, restoration, and development is considered in this module in particular attention to listening, discernment, secrecy, and boundaries.

This module will focus on the topics involving the importance of preaching and teaching in a pastoral role. It will discuss the topics of preparing for a sermon, understanding biblical teachings, the ability to get the point across effectively, and staying true to the text. Accuracy in theology, compassion in pastoral settings, and spiritual depth take precedence over stage presence or charisma for its importance. Teaching a small group of people or a full catechesis will be covered in this module.

Pastoral Ministry requires a major responsibility to maintain integrity. This module explores the weight of the calling. We will work through the boundaries within pastoral care, finances, authority and confidentiality. The module also delves into safeguarding the pastor from abuse of power, manipulation and danger that occur within spiritual manipulation.
