Pastoral Care

This module looks at the purpose of Pastoral care and at the role and principles for responsible Christian caregiving. The underlying principles discovered in this module will assist with the balance of subsequent course materials.

This module will explore the relational foundations for effective pastoral care. We will explore a compassionate presence, actively listening to people’s experiences, discover how to build and nurture trust in pastoral care, and begin to understand emotional intelligence in ministry. Combined, these form the foundations of effective Christ-centred pastoral care.

As we participate in this module, we are also encouraged to develop the traits, virtues, and convictions that lead to meaningful care. To further develop the understanding, practice, character, and practical competencies that will support us as we serve others in a pastoral capacity, we also need to commit ourselves to developing the traits of the person who is effectively involved in caring for others.

This module examines a range of specializations within pastoral care, exploring effective ministry to children, adolescents and young people, senior adults and those in circumstances where they are potentially at risk. We seek to offer a greater awareness and sensitivity to pastoral work in these specialized areas and enable readers to contribute to the growth and care of individuals and communities in these areas.

In this module, we will turn to a discussion of some areas of Christian ministry that are particularly at the center of the life of the church. These are practices that are not exclusively confined to the crises and the difficult moments of life.

Rather, they characterize the ordinary conduct of the Christian life from throughout biblical history until now.

This module explores the process of Christian development, the different ways spiritual growth takes place, the disciplines that encourage maturity, the stages of spiritual life, and the value of perseverance in the walk of faith. By understanding the nature of Christian maturity and spiritual development, we can better appreciate and pursue this lifelong journey.

Christian apologetics is not about winning debates or proving we’re right. It’s supposed to remove obstacles and point people toward Jesus Christ. In this module, we’ll examine the biblical foundations of apologetics, the reliability of the Christian faith, biblical authority, and Jesus’s exclusivity.

Within this module, we focus on the church's relationship with the world around it. We will examine the witness of the church before the world, the church's social engagement, its response to change and cultural pressure, and its mission to the world. These foundational themes help us understand how the church is called to live, serve, and faithfully bear witness within the world God has placed us.

This module unpacks all that the Biblical testimony teaches about the deity, humanity, and work of Jesus Christ; His redemptive mission; and His continued present ministry, to equip you to minister Christ to those that you will serve.

As we understand Jesus better, our foundational commitment to healthy and biblical pastoral ministry will be solidified, for we will know Jesus, and Jesus has what it takes to save our world.
