If someone says, “I know what to do, but my body won’t do it smoothly,” begin with coordination-friendly support. If they say, “I lose the thread before I begin,” start with attention and initiation support. If they say both, treat it as a combined load and simplify accordingly.
Useful micro-prompts in session:
- “If this task had three sliders—movement, focus, planning—which one is highest today?”
- “Where do you feel the snag first: in your body, in your attention, or in the sequence itself?”
- “If we could make one part easier first, which part would matter most?”

- Ease of body
- Ease of mind
Add a brief context tag: rushed, boring, new, noisy, hungry, interrupted, or calm.

Many adults also report heightened fatigue from constantly compensating for coordination challenges. In real life, that often looks like whole-body strain, slower recovery, and less space for everything else.
Some people also carry extra load from proprioceptive and vestibular processing, so everyday environments can feel far more effortful than they look from the outside. Grocery shopping, commuting, queueing, and cluttered kitchens can quietly drain the system.
In co-occurring profiles, motor-planning effort and attention effort can compete for shared resources. A person may say, “After anything coordination-heavy, I can’t think straight,” or, “If I focus hard on the movement, everything else disappears.”
Try an energy curve. Ask the person to sketch their day from waking to sleep, mark when energy drops, and name the kind of tiredness:
- Body-tired: heavy limbs, sore shoulders, tension, physical clumsiness, feeling slowed down
- Brain-tired: fuzzy thinking, drifting attention, mental blankness, losing sequence
- Both: coordination gets rougher as attention fades, and vice versa
This matters because support should match the depletion. Body-tired patterns respond well to load-sharing, slower pacing, simpler movement demands, and kinder transitions. Adults with dyspraxia are often labelled clumsy or awkward, which can shape confidence and willingness to participate. People with late-identified ADHD often absorb repeated criticism into beliefs like “I’m lazy”, and that can quietly erode self-trust and initiative.
For many neurodivergent adults, adapting to fit in becomes a long-running identity project. That ongoing masking and self-editing can influence identity construction, energy, and belonging.
In session, the priority is to create enough safety that the person can examine the story without collapsing into it.
Helpful responses might sound like:
- “It makes sense that this became part of how you saw yourself.”
- “That label may have described other people’s frustration more than your actual needs.”
- “Let’s separate effort from worth and see what kind of support changes the experience.”
As the story softens, experimentation becomes more possible. A person who has lived with “I should just try harder” often finds real relief in asking, “What would better fit look like?”
Question 5: In a real task, exactly where does the sequence fall apart?
Now move from explanation to observation. Choose one everyday task and slow it down enough to see where the friction actually happens.
Driving, cooking, dressing, packing a bag, sending an email, getting out the door: each one contains transition points, and those transitions usually reveal the real bottleneck.
Ask the person to describe the task step by step, almost like a radio commentary:
- What happens first?
- What does your hand reach for?
- Where does your attention jump away?
- What part feels physically awkward?
- At what point do you lose rhythm, sequence, or confidence?
Then build a simple friction map. For cooking, it might look like:
- Standing in the kitchen but not starting: initiation friction
- Filling the pot and spilling water: grip or positioning friction
- Turning to the stove and forgetting the next step: attention shift

- Draining the pot and losing timing: sequencing and movement timing friction
Once the map is visible, support becomes targeted. Three lenses are usually enough:
- Micro-step the task: reduce each stage to one manageable action at a time
- Improve tool and environment fit: lighter equipment, better placement, seated options, less sensory clutter
- Externalise sequence: timers, picture cues, sticky notes, recorded prompts, colour-coding
Task-specific audio cues can be especially useful. What matters most is that the person leaves with language that feels accurate and experiments that feel doable.
