Overview
🌱 Why are essential oils so powerful?
Have you ever smelled your hands after peeling an orange? The scent is sweet orange essential oil, which is found in the fruit's peel.
Many plants contain aromatic essences, such as thyme, lavender, angelica, jasmine, valerian... and even violets! Once extracted, we obtain an essential oil and, depending on the extraction method used, a hydrosol. Aromatherapy is based on the precise use of these molecular principles for medicinal purposes. It is also a branch of phytotherapy.
These powerful and precious natural substances contain the soul of plants: their anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, relaxing, and stimulating properties have been recognized and used for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians embalmed their dead, as well as animals such as cats, ibises, and falcons, in bandages soaked in resins and essential oils of pistachio, cedar, and cypress for preservation.
Essential oils are very powerful because they concentrate the active molecules of several plants in a very small volume. A few drops are enough to produce noticeable effects. It is therefore unnecessary to use large quantities to achieve results; it would even be dangerous because the risk of toxicity is high!
That is why our training presents 50 essential oils and excipients, one by one, with their chemical components, therapeutic properties, use and application according to animal species, and their potential dangers.
🐶 Can essential oils be used safely on animals?
The answer is yes... provided you are familiar with the specific characteristics of each species and best practices. Animals, which are much more sensitive than humans, can benefit from aromatherapy, but the approach is different. The method of administration must always be adapted, and it is very important to understand the chemistry of essential oils in order to understand their effects. Our training therefore devotes a significant portion of its content to this topic.
We also adopt the "less is more" approach: in aromatherapy, less is often better. This minimalist approach ensures the safety of animals while preserving nature's precious resources. For example, while one liter of peppermint essential oil requires "only" 100 kilograms of fresh plant material, lemon balm, which is very low in essential oil, requires 7 to 8 tons of fresh plant material to produce one liter!
It is also important to keep in mind that the anatomy and physiology of animals differ from ours. We cannot simply adapt the doses of essential oils used in human aromatherapy for animals. Their respective metabolisms require specific precautions, which you will learn about during the training. For example, essential oils are toxic to cats. Instead, we will offer them hydrosols, as you will see.
Animals also have a remarkable instinct for determining what they need. You will study how instinctive self-medication allows them to choose, refuse, or dose the essential oils their bodies need.
🎓 Who is this training for?
If you love nature, animals, and scents, you will love this training!
It is aimed at:
• All owners concerned about the well-being of their animals.
• Professionals in animal care or support (naturopaths, osteopaths, behaviorists, breeders, veterinarians, etc.), as well as places that welcome and accommodate animals: boarding facilities, shelters, farms, stables, zoos, pet stores, etc.
• Professionals already working in the wellness field who wish to expand their skills, whether they work with animals or plan to do so: animal communication, equine shiatsu, animal wellness massage, herbal medicine (human and/or animal), Reiki, or other energy therapies.
• People who are retraining for careers in alternative practices and want to work with animals.
And if you are simply passionate about plants, even without any immediate career plans, and want to better understand how essential oils work with animals, you will appreciate the wealth of knowledge imparted throughout the eight modules, whether through theoretical knowledge, case studies, or practical activities.
🚀 Objectives of the Animal Aromatherapy training
Understand the fundamentals of aromatherapy applied to animals.
Use more than 50 essential oils, plant excipients, and hydrosols in an appropriate and safe manner.
Understand the aromatic properties of the essential oils presented, their effects, and their chemistry.
Identify uses and contraindications.
Propose natural treatments to accompany many common disorders in animals: pain and inflammation, wounds, infections, respiratory, urinary, digestive and hormonal disorders, parasite control, skin problems, emotional disorders.
Know what to do in case of animal poisoning with an essential oil.
You will be able to set up your own practice (depending on local legislation) and work as an animal aromatherapy practitioner, either at home, in an animal care facility, or directly at your clients' homes. Sessions generally last one hour and are billed at between €70 and €100, plus any mileage costs.
Please note that the safety and well-being of the animal comes first. For this reason, it is obvious that you will work in conjunction with veterinarians, caregivers, breeders, and shelters. Under no circumstances may you interrupt or modify medical treatment.

Modules
Course syllabus
In this first module, you will learn about the basic principles of aromatherapy: how aromatherapy was discovered, the origin of essential oils and how to choose them wisely, initial explanations of their chemical compositions, the different methods of administration, the precautions required for safe practice, and how aromatherapy should be integrated with respect for living things.
You will discover:
Before discussing the choice of essential oils,
it is necessary to study how we are able to smell them. You will therefore
learn in detail about the mechanisms of human and animal olfaction.
You will then learn about the extraction of
essential oils and see that each technique has its advantages. Hydrosol, a
residue from the steam distillation of plants, is also used in aromatherapy,
particularly for cats. You will study its benefits.
You will also learn that essential oils must
always be diluted before being applied to the skin. To do this, an excipient is
used, most often a vegetable oil. These carriers, as well as oily macerates,
will be presented to you in detail.
You will complete this module with the first
part of the study of aromatic components: an in-depth understanding of plant
chemistry, enabling you to understand their effects and tailor treatments to
the needs of animals.
The module presents:
In this third module, you will continue your
theoretical study of oil chemistry before moving on to practical application.
With safety always in mind, you will also receive a detailed reminder of the
precautions to take when using essential oils on animals.
You will then learn other ways to choose
essential oils, including offering self-medication—under supervision, of
course—to animals, i.e., their intuitive ability to heal themselves by
specifically choosing certain plants and natural remedies. This phenomenon has
given rise to a scientific discipline: zoopharmacognosy.
Finally, you will learn about the essentials
you need to get started: essential oils, hydrosols, and vegetable oils, the
best way to store them, and a few aloe vera-based recipes that are highly
valued for their versatility and ease of use.
The module covers:
Module 4 links molecules to the therapeutic
properties of different parts of plants. You will also study the first part of
the monograph on essential oils (and excipients), which focuses specifically on
dogs, cats, and horses. The specific characteristics of birds, rodents, and
reptiles will be covered later in the course.
You will learn:
In the fifth module, you will continue your
detailed study of excipients and essential oils.
You will study the following monographs:
cornflower, chamomile, juniper, true lavender, lemon, lemongrass, myrrh, sweet
orange, grapefruit, jasmine, lime, lemon balm, marjoram, coconut, neem, neroli,
patchouli, peppermint, Damask rose, verbenone rosemary, sandalwood, St. John's
wort.
In the sixth module, you will complete your
detailed study of excipients and essential oils.
You will see the following monographs: jojoba,
fennel, eucalyptus globulus, eucalyptus radiata, sunflower oil, tea tree,
valerian, vetiver, wintergreen, ylang-ylang, witch hazel, linalool thyme,
thymol thyme, vanilla, violet.
This module provides a summary of the essential
oils to use for each indication. Plants and essential oils are classified
according to their properties, but also according to the imbalances they can
help treat: disorders, affected systems (digestive, nervous, etc.), and
targeted organs.
For each resource, you will find its main
actions as well as an indication of the animal species for which it is
suitable, identified by a letter: F for felines, C for dogs, H for horses and
other herbivores.
The main categories in this module, detailed point by point in tables, are:
In the
eighth and final module, you will find practical advice on offering remedies to
different animals, with the right approach depending on the specific
characteristics of their species. Indeed, depending on the animal, the
aromatherapy solutions to be favored will not necessarily be the same.
A
bibliography will allow you to further your learning and, if you wish, expand
your research.

HolisAnimal was created out of a simple belief: animals deserve care that respects their nature, not just their symptoms. We saw a growing interest in holistic animal care, but also a lot of confusion. Information scattered across traditions, practices, and opinions. Some helpful, some not. Our aim with HolisAnimal is to bring clarity, structure, and responsibility to this space. Our courses are built by compiling knowledge from respected holistic disciplines, practitioner experience, and long-standing natural approaches to animal wellbeing. Rather than following a single method or philosophy, we take a considered, balanced approach. We look at what has stood the test of time, what is used responsibly in practice, and what supports animals without over-intervention. HolisAnimal is for people who want to understand animals more deeply and care for them more thoughtfully. That includes pet guardians, aspiring holistic practitioners, and those already working with animals who want to broaden their perspective. Our learning is practical, accessible, and grounded. We encourage students to think critically, work ethically, and always consider the individual animal in front of them. We are proud to support a growing international community of learners who share these values. For us, HolisAnimal is not just an online academy. It’s part of a wider shift toward calmer, more conscious ways of living and working alongside animals.
