Overview
🌱 Herbal medicine and its holistic approach
Plants have always been part of animals' lives, even carnivores. You may have seen a dog or cat eating grass to purge itself. Animals know which plants will help them, and this knowledge, acquired from their mothers, is a precious legacy.
Herbal medicine, which encompasses the knowledge and use of medicinal plants, is not just an alternative practice. It is a path in its own right, rich in tradition, observation of living things, and transmission of knowledge.
Applied to animals, it allows for a natural and respectful approach to their health. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, animal herbalism seeks to understand the animal as a whole: its body, of course, but also its environment, diet, emotions, and the needs of its species.
It is this holistic vision that makes it so important today, at a time when more and more owners aspire to a more conscious relationship with their furry, feathered, or scaly animal companions, an inter-species intelligence; dare we even say a relationship of equals.
Whether it's to support a tired body, accompany seasonal changes, boost immunity, or soothe stress-related disorders, medicinal plants can become true allies... provided you know them well and know how to use them correctly!
That is the whole purpose of this training: to teach you, over nine modules, the properties of each plant according to the signs presented by the animal, while being aware that each organ and each system is part of a larger whole in relation to the Earth and the seasons.
🐈 Why every pet owner should learn about herbal medicine...
Our animals rely on us. To feed them, protect them, and open the door for them (yes!), but also to take care of their health on a daily basis.
Learning about herbal medicine is part of this responsibility towards your animal.
It's much more than just learning the names of plants. It's about acquiring skills to preserve and support their health, in order to ensure the best possible quality of life for them.
The lessons contained in this training will enable you to:
Naturally relieve minor everyday ailments: digestion, insect bites, minor wounds, ear infections, anxiety, etc.
Boost your pet's immunity as the cold season approaches.
Increase their vitality if necessary.
Help them cope with seasonal changes, such as shedding.
Support a medical protocol in agreement with your veterinarian: digestive disorders, heart problems, diabetes, joint pain, etc.
And above all, prevent rather than cure, support rather than coerce, and keep a watchful and loving eye on your beloved friends.
We invite you to continue reading to the bottom of the page to consult the detailed training program, with the list of plants and conditions studied.
💡 What makes our training unique?
Our training program, designed with the utmost care, takes a resolutely holistic approach, combining the teachings of animal herbalism with those of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is a true exploration of a universe where care, cycles, and the plant world intertwine.
You will discover the five seasons of TCM, with their corresponding organs, physiological functions, elements... and, of course, the plants suited to each period. It's a way to reconnect with the rhythms of life, so you can better care for your animals all year round.
Through nine modules, you will learn about the different galenic forms, decoctions, infusions, mother tinctures, EPS, etc., and when to favor one over another. You will also study a few homemade meal plans that are more suited to the digestive systems of cats and dogs than industrial food, in particular BARF for dogs (biologically appropriate raw food). You will see how to adjust dosages according to species, weight, and situation (acute or chronic) and which plants are most effective for the issues encountered.
You will be invited to observe, feel, and test during the practical activities offered in each module, and you will be asked to reflect on the case studies presented, for which the recommended protocol is indicated. In addition, a quiz at the end of each module will help you assimilate the concepts studied.
Once you feel ready, you can take the final exam online. A minimum of 80% correct answers is required. Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate as a Practitioner of Animal Herbal Medicine.
👩🎓 Is it possible to work as an animal herbalist?
It is entirely possible to work as an animal herbalist, also known as an animal herbal medicine practitioner. This profession can be practiced in addition to an existing activity, and many animal herbalists are already animal naturopaths, caregivers, behaviorists, dog trainers, breeders, or veterinarians.
In this regard, it is important to note that an animal herbalist is not a substitute for a veterinarian. They do not make diagnoses or replace ongoing treatment. They always put the animal's interests before their own, know their own limitations, and refer clients elsewhere if necessary. As a future animal herbalist, you will always work to support, prevent, and comfort, while complying with the legal framework.
That being said, if your love of animals and plants has drawn you to this training, know that you can set up your own practice even without an established client base. Certain qualities are expected above all else: listening skills, gentleness and empathy, observation and patience, a balance between rigor and adaptability, and respect for living beings.
In addition, as with any practice related to well-being, continuing education, field experience, and open-mindedness will be your best allies in order to evolve sustainably in this field and benefit from recognized expertise.

Modules
Course syllabus
This first module
invites you to reflect on the importance of animals in our society. You will
see several striking examples of animal intelligence and how animals
self-medicate.
You will also
explore the perception of animal herbal medicine and discover some of the
sometimes justified criticism it faces. You will then study dosages,
particularly for cats and dogs based on their weight, as well as galenics,
i.e., the different ways of preparing and administering medicinal plants.
The module presents:
Module 2 focuses
specifically on maintaining good health in dogs and cats.
You will begin by
learning what defines a healthy dog. You will learn about their diet,
nutritional needs, care requirements, and what constitutes an ideal living
environment for them. The course will also introduce you to the BARF raw food
diet, which is closest to the ancestral diet of canines. Menus are provided for
adult dogs and puppies.
Next, you will
study cats: their behavior, their specific relationship to smells, their diet,
and their nutritional needs. Here again, examples of homemade menus are
presented for adult cats and kittens.
Both dogs and cats
are prone to intestinal parasites, so the module will conclude with a focus on
natural remedies with deworming properties.
You will discover:
Now that you have
studied the essentials in the first modules, in this third part you will learn
about essential natural remedies.
To begin with, the
course presents the importance of a healthy environment for the well-being of
our four-legged friends. Just like humans, the many pollutants found in water,
furniture, small objects, household and cosmetic products, as well as cigarettes
and pesticides, expose animals to an unimaginable number of harmful substances.
The course then
provides a non-exhaustive overview of complementary natural therapies, so that
you know what is available and, if you are interested, can explore the subject
further on your own. You will also receive a range of essential natural
remedies, which will be studied in detail in the following modules, and which
we recommend you have at home.
The module
presents:
This fourth module
gets to the heart of the issues and places the training in a holistic approach,
in harmony with the seasons.
To begin with, the
first part of the course will teach you how to adjust the dosage according to
the galenic form and the nature of a symptom (acute or chronic). As some
dietary supplements and plants are only available for human use, you will learn
how to adapt their dosage to the animal's weight. You will also learn what to
do in the event of poisoning, so that you can respond appropriately if an
accident should unfortunately occur.
As announced in the
module title, the second part of the course invites you to explore herbal
medicine from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). You will
study its fundamental principles and the links between organs and seasons.
You will begin a
detailed study of the organs, their functions, the signs of imbalance in
animals, and the appropriate plants. The liver, gallbladder, and thyroid will
be the first topics covered.
Here are the key
points of the module:
Module 5 continues
the descriptions of plants related to summer according to TCM. You will study
the heart, blood vessels, and small intestine, their respective roles, and the
disorders that can affect animal health.
The fifth module
presents :
Traditional Chinese
medicine distinguishes a fifth season, located at the end of summer and the
beginning of autumn, and associated with the Earth. In this sixth module, you
will discover the organs related to this period, as well as the plants that can
be used to relieve them in animals. You will also learn how to stimulate or
regulate appetite as needed.
In addition, you
will study diseases of civilization that affect our animal friends just as they
affect us: pancreatic diseases such as diabetes and pancreatitis,
osteoarthritis, and joint inflammation.
Here is the course
content:
This module focuses
on autumn, the season associated with the lungs in TCM. It begins with an
invitation to pay attention to your own lungs, in particular through a
breathing exercise. This activity will help you release stress and tension, so
that you can then be fully available during your sessions.
You will then
explore the role of the lungs, the plants recommended to support them, as well
as the immune system and the plants that strengthen its protective defenses.
Two other organs are also key components of this system: the large intestine
and the skin. You will finish the seventh module by studying them, again
accompanied by the appropriate plants.
The module
explores:
This module covers
the last season in TCM, winter, which is associated with the kidneys and the
urinary system in general. You will learn about the roles and pathologies of
the kidneys, bladder, and prostate.
The module then
covers two major systems whose health is often neglected in animals: the
endocrine system, which plays an important role in regulating many
physiological processes, and the bones, which are essential for mobility and
whose proper functioning is perhaps even more important in animals than in
humans.
The module
concludes with a brief presentation of some plants that support behavior and
mood.
You will learn
about:
The ninth module
concludes the training. At this stage, you will be familiar with the most
effective plants in animal herbal medicine. This final module completes your
learning by introducing you to the most common ailments affecting our
four-legged friends.
In addition to the
general information covered in the previous modules, this section also provides
additional details on how to differentiate the care required for different
animals: dogs, cats, horses, as well as birds, reptiles, and rodents.
A bibliography
concludes this course, allowing you to expand your knowledge if you wish.

HolisAnimal was created out of a simple belief: animals deserve care that respects their nature, not just their symptoms. We saw a growing interest in holistic animal care, but also a lot of confusion. Information scattered across traditions, practices, and opinions. Some helpful, some not. Our aim with HolisAnimal is to bring clarity, structure, and responsibility to this space. Our courses are built by compiling knowledge from respected holistic disciplines, practitioner experience, and long-standing natural approaches to animal wellbeing. Rather than following a single method or philosophy, we take a considered, balanced approach. We look at what has stood the test of time, what is used responsibly in practice, and what supports animals without over-intervention. HolisAnimal is for people who want to understand animals more deeply and care for them more thoughtfully. That includes pet guardians, aspiring holistic practitioners, and those already working with animals who want to broaden their perspective. Our learning is practical, accessible, and grounded. We encourage students to think critically, work ethically, and always consider the individual animal in front of them. We are proud to support a growing international community of learners who share these values. For us, HolisAnimal is not just an online academy. It’s part of a wider shift toward calmer, more conscious ways of living and working alongside animals.
